Designed and handcrafted by Brendan Bartlett.
We are living in uncertain times. The aim of Journey is to evoke a sense of movement and progression towards somewhere uncertain. The feeling of being on a windy road and not knowing what's around the corner. This can be interpreted as a reflection of current world issues; the ongoing COVID situation and broader political instability.
Journey continues my sculptural work experimenting with dynamic arrays to evoke a sense of movement or tell a story. The wall becomes part of the sculpture and the playful interaction of shadows, light and shapes changes through the day. The feeling of movement and progression is accentuated when moving around Journey, which appears very different from various viewpoints and can seem to be moving or leaping out of the wall. This is created by the combination of exaggerated perspective, repetition and variation in relief.
Journey is fully made and finished by hand. The timber is Australian Eucalyptus and contains a natural variation in grain and small knots, complimented with mixed metals that are finely finished yet raw in appearance.
